Shrinkage joints are one of the most vulnerable elements of concrete bridges as they are located on the deck surface and are subject to continuous dynamic loads from the passage of vehicles. In addition, they are exposed to adverse environmental conditions (deck rain, corrosive chemicals such as salt and petroleum products). They need to be inspected frequently and repaired in a timely manner before being exposed to loads that could cause serious damage to lane sections and endanger driver safety.
